2014 Skylark Grenache, Mendocino
Grenache may have its apogee in the south of France, especially Chateauneuf-du-Pape, where it has been the centerpiece varietal for centuries. The varietal does thrive in warm climates globally, notably in Spain and increasingly so in California. Our home for Grenache has been Charlie Sawyer’s site 1000 feet elevation above Ukiah in Mendocino. Using famed clonal material from Chateau de Beaucastel in Chateauneuf, Charlie and vineyard manager Peter Chevalier have created a world class site for this varietal. We are very proud to present the 2014 Sawyer Grenache as our eighth vintage from this esteemed plot.
Brooding aromas of black cherry, raspberry and brown spices, opening into bakers chocolate ripeness with a floral violet top note. The fruit-infused palate is ripe and creamy, with skin tannins lending structure and grip to the textured fruit. While naturally medium-bodied, the ample cherry fruit caresses the palate with fruit dimension and warm baking spices. Though very approachable now, inherent fruit and structure suggest a graceful evolution in the bottle.
