This is our inaugural bottling of Bennett Bench Syrah. After the vineyard sale and replanting of our prized site, Rodgers Creek Vineyard we turned to Bennett Valley in search of a new premium Syrah site. This cool, maritime-influenced valley welcomes coastal fog rolling in from the Petaluma Gap. Framed by Sonoma Mountain and Bennett Peak, the hillside parcels ripen slowly and evenly—especially those planted to our Syrah Noir and Alban Clone 1. The 2023 growing season was late and cool, without temperature extremes or heat spikes. We let this Bennett Syrah hang until optimal ripeness, harvesting on November 3—our latest pick ever. In the glass, the wine presents a deep, inviting purple hue. Aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, game, and black pepper are lifted by a fresh violet note. True to our affinity for Old World style, Bennett Bench delivers spice, elegance, and balance, with a potpourri of aromatics enveloping the fruit and showcasing refined varietal character. On the palate, the wine is a beautiful expression of California Syrah: supple, layered, and poised, equally enjoyable in its vibrant youth or cellared to reveal deeper nuance.
