2017 Skylark Grenache, Mendocino

$28.00

2017 Skylark Grenache is sourced from Charlie Sawyer’s beautiful vineyard high above Ukiah in Mendocino County. With clonal material sourced from Chateau de Beaucastel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, this is one of the premier sites for Grenache in Northern California.

In 2017, California finally enjoyed some meaningful rainfall, a refreshing change from the persistent drought conditions of the previous harvests. After the late August heat spike, September was sunny and warm without extreme weather – perfect for our crew to hand pick Grenache on September 14. After primary fermentation in tank and secondary in barrel, we allowed the 2017 Grenache to rest for 24 months in seasoned French cooperage before bottling unfined and unfiltered.

Ruby red. Aromatics of black cherry, raspberry, forest floor and exotic brown spice. The palate is silky and pure, with the red cherry fruit evolving into plum and raspberry with subtle nuances of bakers chocolate flecked with Moroccan spice. The fruit expands gracefully on the finish, which has just the right amount of grip to suggest a leisurely evolution in bottle.
